The country where our exports increased the most last year: Gibraltar
Gibraltar has an interesting historical past. With the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Spain returned the fort to England. However, Gibraltar's status is still a matter of debate between England and Spain (at times the European Union is involved in this debate).
It is a small country with an area of 6 km2 and a population of 29,328, according to 2016 figures. Although it covers a small area of the world, it occasionally causes problems between the two countries. In referendums held in 1967 and 2006, Gibraltarians decided to stay under the UK administration.
Although the economic recession in Europe today is felt, it is a place of high growth (7.8% in 2012) and low unemployment (2.5% in 2012).
Let's get to the main issue of exports... In 2016, we exported $70.5 million to Gibraltar. In 2015, this figure was $18.5 million. So there has been an increase of 280% in the last year.
Among the products exported from Turkey to Gibraltar are mineral oils, which are vital to the automotive and machinery sectors with $63.3 million. In second place are diesel vehicles with $6.3 million, and in third place are cables with $474 thousand.
Gibraltar, which has been re-emerged today between the EU and the UK, where the waters have not subsided after Brexit, is more likely to be talked about due to its geopolitic position.
