Being a Woman in Business Life in Turkey
Being a woman in business in Turkey, although the exact date is not known, with the westernization movements in the late 19th century, some women began to have the opportunity to study and study. In 1923, with the adoption of the Turkish Civil Code, women were granted equal rights, and women officially began to work, work, and work for the first time. Especially in the 1960s, there was a noticeable increase in women's employment and education. With the industrialization period, women began to work in textile workshops, factories and other sectors. During this period, however, women's role in working life was limited to low wages and low status.
Today, women's workspace has expanded, but low wages and low status do not seem to have changed much. As for the reasons for this; the fact that the birth and milk permit granted to women by law is against employers, women have equal knowledge, experience and experience, but because of where they are seen in social society, employers who have adopted the idea of working too little will not be able to comply with the flexible work hours they require. The places of women in social society are, unfortunately, still housewives in today's Turkey; they are interested in their husband, home and children, and this is not presented as a way of life, it is their obligation.
The difficulties they face in business are not limited to low status and low wage, but situations such as mobbing and harassment have also been recorded. Some of the mobbings they undergo include being criticized for their style, being judged, being forced to answer to colleagues about what's going on in their lives, being tried and threatened to be fired over their gender when they don't comply with flexible working hours/not sleeping.
As far as harassment is concerned, harassment is still a big problem, not in working life, but in business. The difference between work life and work life is that women can be harassed not only at work, but also at interviews, pre-interviews, internships. When it comes to the abuse situation, issues such as whether or not the woman is being harassed, obstacles will be put in front of her in her working life, she will not be believed, she will be retaliated, are being used to intimidate and intimidate the woman. The woman, who struggles with all this alone, can eventually get burnout syndrome.
What Can Be Done for Women's Employment in Business?
- Lack of access to women's (private or public) care support. Especially when it comes to childcare and pre-school education, women are unable to find a place they can trust and are not getting enough support. This forces women to make a choice between their families and their careers. The most effective way to solve problems stemming from the lack of care services is to enrich universal day care support, pre-school services, and elderly care services, improving quality.
- The proliferation of part-time working models is qualified to increase women's employment. Of course, part-time working models should also be prevented from promoting precarious employment. To solve this problem, secure flexible contracts and flexible working hours must be implemented without usurping employees' rights and leaving employees in the exploitation of some workplaces. Another consideration for partial and part-time work is to prevent women who have to work part-time from having trouble accessing opportunities such as promotion and progress in the workplace. If awareness of flexible work and part-time work is raised and the general view changes, these difficulties will also disappear.
- Another of the most important issues to ensure that women are employed and remain employed is the Support of Women Entrepreneurship. Women's biggest complaints about entrepreneurship are difficulty accessing loans and lack of management information (know-how).
- It is also important for women to be aware of the support provided. In this respect, promotional activities such as information meetings, public spots are of great importance. In addition, it is important for female entrepreneur role models to be selected and go to schools, universities, businesses and promote women entrepreneurs. The example of FRAUEN Unternehmen (Germany) can be based here.
